Last fall, Red Hat, the dominant commercial Linux distributor, acquired some server products from Time Warner, and last week at the Red Hat Summit in New Orleans, Red Hat Directory Server, the first release by the company of those Netscape-derived products, made its debut. RHDS was arguably the star of the show--unless you count Wil Wheaton, the nerdy actor from Star Trek, The Next Generation, who in real life has become a hard-core advocate for open source and who was also at the Red Hat Summit last week. Novell, HP to Sell Preconfigured Linux-Oracle Servers

One of the great things about proprietary minicomputers from the 1980s and 1990s such as IBM's AS/400s, Digital Equipment's VAXes, and Hewlett-Packard's HP 3000s was that when you bought one of these machines, it had everything you needed on it: server hardware, operating system, database, and development tools. It was an entire computing platform, nearly devoid of choice, which greatly simplified things. Of course, this lack of choice within a platform and the incompatibilities between such platforms is what spawned the Unix movement, which was all about standardization and driving down costs. IBM Launches Promised 32-Way Intel Server

After a long wait that was due primarily to the delays in bringing 64-bit Windows and 64-bit Linux operating systems to market with a suite of suitable applications and 64-bit Intel Xeon processors to match them, IBM has finally delivered on its promise to get a 32-way X86 server to market. Last week, IBM rolled out the xSeries 460, which, like the xSeries 366 announced a few months ago, is based on Intel's new 64-bit processors and IBM's X3 "Hurricane" chipset. READ MORE >
