Silicon Graphics Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy

After years of struggling to try to catch the wave in high performance computing with its Linux-based and Itanium-based Altix supercomputers, server maker Silicon Graphics yesterday morning filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The filing for protection from creditors, which is intended to allow SGI to get its financial house in order, follows some tumultuous months for the company, which has killed off products, spun off units, and changed upper management in an effort to right itself. Unisys Launches New Unified ES7000 Server

Server maker Unisys may have forged a server alliance with former Japanese competitor NEC last October, but it still had its own engineering underway for a new generation of ES7000 servers. Stonesoft Unveils New Generation of Firewall, IPS Products

Stonesoft last week unveiled its second generation of network security products, including its software- or hardware-based firewall, which runs on iSeries and zSeries partitions, and its hardware-based intrusion prevention system (IPS). The new firewall/virtual private network (VPN) products focus on securing new voice over IP (VOIP) and video traffic workloads, and sport features like deep packet inspection for HTTP that blurs the lines with IPS and detection systems.
