Nuts to Linus Torvalds.

On January 19, Bruce Perens, executive director of the Linux
Desktop Consortium extolled the virtues of the latest round of
Linux desktops for businesses being shown at the recent
LinuxWorld Expo:

http://www.linuxpipeline.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleId=17500307

Only one business day earlier, while attending Linux.conf.au in
Australia, Linux Torvalds was quoted by Australian IT as saying
that it will take five to 10 years before "normal users" start
seeing Linux desktop:

http://australianit.news.com.au/articles/0,7204,8407881%5E15841%5E%5Enbv%5E,00.html

Torvalds is a sharp man, someone who in the world of technology
is easy to admire. But I sometimes find his seeming
disassociation with the business world a little off-putting. And
this is one of those times. Because if desktop Linux takes 5-10
years to make its first noticeable appearance before the
computing masses, it may never appear.

Linus Torvalds is selling the little OS he built short. He may be
doing that because he's not usually given to chest thumping and
brash pronouncements. But at the very least, someone needs to say
confidently that desktop Linux adoption will be growing at a
noticeable clip by the end of this decade.

Linux needs a spiritual leader who can promote it. In some ways,
that flies in the face of the open-source process. But this isn't
about process. It's about perception. It's about vision. It's
about making this OS work for the people who haven't adopted it
yet. And most of those people like warm, touchy-feely, consumer-
like, OS control surfaces. The kind Linux doesn't have much of.
The kind that companies like Lindows, Xandros, Mandrake, and one
or two others are attempting to build.

Linux needs support from within to make it beyond the gee-whiz
phase. And that's going to involve commitment, not hesitation.

2. REVIEW: SuSE 9.0: A Distro Worth Paying For
SUSE 9 offers a superb printed manual, a great installation
interface, a modern KDE system in addition to the more standard,
older GNOME interface, and a new kernel build. It's easy to see
why Novell thought enough of the software to buy the company.

3. TRENDS: 'Tumultuous Changes' Coming To Desktop PCs
The venerable desktop PC is about to undergo significant changes,
with many interfaces and buses getting upgrades. Can Linux keep
up with Intel and Microsoft?

4. VOTING BOOTH: Is Desktop Linux 5-10 Years Out?
Is Linus Torvalds right that "it's going to take literally five
to 10 years before 'normal users' start seeing" Linux emerge as a
serious contender on the desktop?

http://www.linuxpipeline.com/vote/desktop_1-27.jhtml

-- Your Favorite Distro --
This isn't your father's favorite distro. (It isn't your
newsletter author's favorite distro, either.) But apparently for
50 percent of the over 4,500 Linux Pipeline readers who've voted,
Lindows is their favorite Linux distribution. Pulling up in
distant second and third place are SuSE and Red Hat with 12
percent and 10 percent of the vote, respectively.

I'll be honest, I never would have guessed that.

By the way, what distro do I use? Mandrake, which got 7 percent
of the vote.

It's perhaps interesting to note that every single distro we
asked about was claimed by at least a handful of votes.
Smoothwall, which is primarily a firewall application of Linux,
got only a one vote though.

5. EXPERT VIEWS: Can Open Source Revive Novell?
Has Novell bought a magic wand in SuSE? Or is it headed to the
death-cart anyway?
