1. PERSPECTIVES: Linux's Good News

Linux has a lot to celebrate, as does Novell this week at BrainShare in
Salt Lake City. The open-source operating system and the aging
networking company are the perfect match. Each will enliven the other,
and both have a lot to bring to the party.

Novell is working on and starting to release a blizzard of Linux-based
and Linux-oriented products, in conjunction with SuSE. The development
of Linux-rejuvenated Novell products and Novell-reinforced Linux
enterprise-class products is win-win for everyone but Microsoft.

Meanwhile, IBM is expanding its association with Red Hat according to a
Red Hat announcement today by offering to pre-load Red Hat Enterprise
Linux v.3 on IBM eServer hardware.

Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Utah, Missouri are launching
a software repository next month designed to let government agencies
make more efficient use of open-source software.

No matter how focused you and I might be on Linux bits and open-source
app code, the bottom line for the success of this software is the rate
of adoption by businesses and institutions around the world. And while
that isn't happening overnight, it is happening.
