1. EDITOR'S NOTE: Red Hat, IBM Oppose Microsoft On Desktop

Red Hat and IBM took measures recently designed to erode
Microsoft's dominance on computer desktops. 

IBM launched an alternative to Microsoft Office; it's a server-
based application that runs on platforms including Linux,
Windows, handheld computers and cell phones. Of course, there are
already several competitors to Office on the market, but the IBM
product is different in that it offers an Office plug-in designed
to make it work with the Microsoft software.

Red Hat, meanwhile, introduced a new version of its Desktop
Linux, with new features designed to enhance manageability and
security.

IBM and Red Hat are both attempting to take market share from
Microsoft where Microsoft is vulnerable: on manageability and
cost. The IBM software is designed to allow users to maintain a
single application suite across multiple platforms, from pocket-
sized to desktop, and is priced at an estimated $2 per user. The
Red Hat software is designed for large-scale deployments, and is
priced starting at $2,500 for 10 users. Both products are
significantly less expensive than their Microsoft competitors. 

And now, a random unrelated thought regarding OpenOffice.org. Has
anybody ever thought of renaming that software "I Can't Believe
It's Not Microsoft Office!"?
