1. EDITOR'S NOTE: Open Source Is Startlingly Popular

The results of our recent survey on open source in the enterprise
will be startling even to people who already knew that open
source is popular in the mainstream.

Business Users Embrace Open Source
http://www.linuxpipeline.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleId=20900473

A whopping 70% of 420 business technology professionals surveyed
by InformationWeek said they use Linux, up from 56% a year ago.
Linux and Apache are now running key systems, and open source
software is competing with proprietary applications for strategic
business processes.

Of the companies running Linux, 83% use it primarily for web or
intranet servers, with other top uses being application
development, database management, e-mail and message hosting.
Three quarters of Linux users chose it for performance and
reliability.

The study also puts paid to the canard that support for open
source software is any more difficult to get than for proprietary
software. Businesses get support for open source from the same
vendors they're using to support proprietary technology,
companies like Dell, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Oracle and SAP.

The fact that enterprises CAN get open source support from those
big vendors is likely a driver for open source's increased
mainstream adoption; like Tony Soprano said, it's tough doing
business with strangers.

Support from major vendors is good, but dependence on major
vendors is bad. And vendor independence is a major driver for the
world's largest country's adoption of Linux. China well remembers
being carved up by the major Western powers in the 19th Century,
and, in the 21st Century, it's looking to avoid dependence on
foreign technology. Linux is one of several technologies that
China is embracing as an alternative to Western standards.
