3) Shop Talk: Cisco or Foundry for Small Campus Core?
------------------------------------------------------------
Question of the Week: "My organization can only afford to buy one pair
of Layer 2/3 switches as the backbone for about 2,400 LAN ports. Our
users typically connect to 24-port 10/100 workgroup switches with 100
Mbps uplinks, although we want dual-homed Gigabit Ethernet from new
workgroups to each core switch. We are considering a pair of either
Catalyst 4507R switches from Cisco or FastIron 800 switches. We would
be interested to hear from any network engineers who have made a
similar selection."

------------------------------------------------------------
9) Editor's Bookshelf
------------------------------------------------------------
Our editors have chosen "Designing Routing and Switching Architectures
for Enterprise Networks" by Howard C. Berkowitz as this week's
featured companion book.
By providing a fundamental understanding of how switches and routers
operate, this book enables readers to effectively use these tools to
build networks. The book walks network designers through all aspects
of requirements analysis and deployment strategies. It is not intended
for people concerned with small networks and only a few computers;
rather, it's for people who are--or want to be--responsible for
building large networks. The book strengthens readers' professional
abilities and helps them develop the skills necessary to advance in
their profession. Written in an open and friendly style, it includes
practical examples, configuration guides, case studies, tips and
warnings.
