-----------------------------------------------------------
This week, we tested third-party Microsoft Exchange Server
replacements that offer Outlook users mail, calendaring, group
scheduling, task management and notes for a fraction of the price
of Exchange. It was slim pickins', but that didn't stop us from taking
a
hard look at the products.
Plus, there's still time to try your hand at our business technology
optimization TechQuiz. And, if you've got a tough IT problem, post it
to our Ask the Experts or Shop Talk forums to receive real-world,
hands-on advice.
Be sure to bookmark our Weblog, the Network Computing Daily Blog,
and check back often for IT news and views.

Here's a sampling of this week's posts:
a) Shop Talk: Cisco vs. Enterasys
------------------------------------------------------------
Question of the Week: "Re-designing our infrastructure to provide
a server backbone that is separate from the core distribution switch
in the corporate office, and a server backbone switch in the remote
offices to separate the servers and devices from the user community.
Have been reviewing products from both Cisco(4500) and Enterasys
(E-series).
Both also have new products under review.
Currently have 10 offices with Cisco routers and Enterasys switches.
Planning on VLANing at the core and in each remote office.
Could use some feedback from those of you who have had experience with
both for any "gotcha's" that should be considered. Both vendors'
products have more than enough bandwidth so speed is not an issue.
Areas we are focusing on are mirroring many-to-one for port sniffing,
VLAN performance, port authentication, and management software. Any
other
considerations would be greatly appreciated!!
thanx."

b) Ask the Experts: SMC2635W Linux Driver
------------------------------------------------------------
Question of the Week: "I have an SMC2635W Wi-Fi card. I want to use it
with a Linux laptop. The Web site for this item lists it as supported
under Linux, but I haven't found any. The SMC site has a driver for
98, ME, 2000 and XP only. Am I missing something? Is there a Linux
driver somewhere? If so, where? I have seen elsewhere that unsupported
ones could work by using a driver for another card that uses the same
chipset. If I need to do this, where can I find a list of ADM chipset
cards that have Linux support? Thanks in advance." --Grant Russell
