2) Feature: Enterprise Application Integration
------------------------------------------------------------
By Don MacVittie
EAI (enterprise application integration) tools let your applications
mirror a network architecture, with a single point at which
applications deposit updates and all interested parties can pick
them up.

Here's a sampling of this week's posts:
a) Shop Talk: New Network Processor Architecture for Intrusion
Prevention System
------------------------------------------------------------
Question of the Week: Looks to me that Intel's Twins Tower Network
Processor concept presented in IEEE Network Vol. 17, No. 4 (no link
available) is the best architecture going in dealing with
deep-pattern, stateful packet processing that is needed by the
Intrusion Prevention System (never mind IDS). Shared Memory is king.
I/O and PCI have been measured as too slow for 2.1 Gbps traffic. The
only disadvantage is the 1.2-microsecond latency (as opposed to 40 ns
for shallow-pattern packet processing). What other better architecture
is out there? --Z Egbert
Lend Z Egbert a hand or post your own question or comment.

b) Ask the Experts: A Question From a Novice Network Manager
------------------------------------------------------------
Question of the Week: About a year ago, I implemented a Frame Relay
connection between two offices that were, until then, not connected
directly. I would like to get a product (preferably software) that
will tell me the utilization of this connection, so that I can
intelligently adjust bandwidth, when required. Our servers all run
Windows 2000 and our desktops are Windows 2000 and Windows XP. I'm not
even sure what a product of this sort is called. Any ideas would be
most helpful. --Scott Siderman
Lend Scott a hand or post your own question or comment.

7) BuzzCut
------------------------------------------------------------
a) SCO Trades Unix For Litigation
By Lori MacVittie
At the same time that the U.S. Copyright Office was awarding SCO the
copyright to System IV Unix late last month, the company magnanimously
decreed that any commercial Linux customer purchasing a new UnixWare
license would not be liable for past copyright violations.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eM5o0E43wY0V40B5Mf0A3
b) 802.16a: Sedan or Mack Truck?
By Dave Molta
Intel will develop silicon in support of the emerging IEEE 802.16a
metropolitan-area network standard, also known as WiMax. But comparing
the prospects for Wi-Fi with those of 802.16a is like comparing sport
sedans with 10-ton trucks.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eM5o0E43wY0V40B5Mg0A4
c) IPv6's Premature Birth
By Peter Morrissey
Moving to IPv6 in the next couple of years would be premature, since
it will be many years before we exhaust the current pool of IPv4
addresses.

------------------------------------------------------------
8) Security Watch: Mesh Networks: Too Little Too Soon
------------------------------------------------------------
By Robert Moskowitz
We can't seem to get one new technology up and running before we're
developing other technologies to solve the problems created by the
first one. Wireless networks are a case in point.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eM5o0E43wY0V40B5Mi0A6
------------------------------------------------------------
9) NWC Weblogs
------------------------------------------------------------
a) Daily Blog: Warning Labels for Linux
Until we can get this whole SCO mess under control, I'd like to
propose that a warning label be affixed to all Linux distributions:
"The use of this product may induce frivolous litigation." Read on,
if you dare.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eM5o0E43wY0V40B5Mj0A7
b) Daily Blog: Sun Goes Gnome
Sun's announcement yesterday that its 9 8/03 Solaris update would
incorporate the Gnome 2.0 Desktop as an alternative to its "less than
zero" useable interface, CDE, does more than make Solaris a kinder and
gentler OS.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eM5o0E43wY0V40B5Mk0A8
c) Daily Blog: Far Out Disaster Recovery Services
Ah the moon. Our closest celestial buddy in the sky. It governs our
tides, rules our emotions (allegedly) and, now, if TransOrbital has
its way, the moon will be home to the first outer space disaster
recovery storage center.

10) Editor's Bookshelf and Storage White Paper Pick
------------------------------------------------------------
Our editors have chosen "Implementing IP Services at the Network Edge"
by David Ginsburg and Marie Hattar as this week's featured companion
book. The authors provide insight into provisioning capabilities,
types of services and various access technologies. They also explain
Internet architecture, regulations, types of ISPs and carriers and how
they fit into the network, and market projections for subscriber
services.

Storage White Paper Pick
-------------------------------------------------------------
This week's hottest storage white paper is "Effective Storage
Management Using Disk-based Technology," published by PowerQuest. It
introduces a paradigm shifting architecture for storage management
based on a disk management software technology called V2I (virtual
volume imaging). In this architecture, V2I technology is the common
data object of storage management, and when used in conjunction with
an array of management applications, utilities and a visual user
interface, enables a simpler and more complete management of the
entire storage lifecycle.

Tools Are Still Taking Baby Steps
------------------------------------------------------------
By Terry Sweeney
Storage policy management shows promise in enforcing rules on how
storage resources are used. But the technology is still at least three
to five years from maturity.
