This week, we tested servers priced under $1,000. Along with a battery
of performance tests, we rated systems on expandability, warranty
options, management/configuration, features/options and price. HP's
ProLiant ML330 took top honors.

Plus, there's still time to try your hand at our Web caching TechQuiz.
And, if you've got a tough IT problem, post it to one of our
forums--Ask the Experts or Shop Talk--to receive real-world, hands-on
advice.

Be sure to bookmark our Weblog, the Network Computing Daily Blog,
and check back often for IT news and views.

a) New Site Navigation
You are cordially invited to an ongoing launch party for our newly
remodeled site navigation UI. In an effort to cut down on unnecessary
JavaScript and other Web-unfriendly elements, we have created a tabbed
menu system that basically presents site content from a number of
popular and necessary points of view.

You now can directly access new content organized within "guide"
pages like:

Reviews--Evaluate products with our sneak previews and head-to-head
comparisons.
Know-How--Learn how to manage your network with tutorials, primers,
training materials and the like.
Talk--Read and respond to editor opinions, blog posts and forum
entries.
Technologies--Find all content according to technologies like
wireless, security, infrastructure, etc.

Within each of these guide pages, you'll also find all site features
and tools relevant to the content at hand. So you'll always have
immediate access to what matters most in your job.

6) Ask the Experts and Shop Talk Forums
------------------------------------------------------------
a) Ask the Experts Question of the Week
By James Tiget
Is a 10.200.x.x network with a 16-bit mask a Class A or a Class B
network? From what I understand, this is a Class A network with a
default Class B mask, which does not change the class of the network
regardless of what the mask is set to.... Correct?

Lend James a hand or find out the answer for yourself.

b) Shop Talk Post of the Week
By Patrick Sharkey
Christopher Beers says he installed Red Hat 9 Linux on a 200-MZ
machine with 64 MB of RAM and 2 GB of disk space ("Latest Red Hat
Delivers Key App," 6.13.2003). He was very lucky. If you check
www.redhat.com you will see that Red Hat no longer certifies specific
machines as Red-Hat-9-compatible. It only has a list of certified
components. If any of your components do not appear on this list, I
would be very wary of trying to install Red Hat 9.

If you have a similar (or dissimilar) experience, let Patrick know.

a) Behold, the Power of Politics
By Don MacVittie
The technologies you're comfortable with and the companies you favor
must not cloud your vision. It is your responsibility to find not just
the cheapest solution but also one that solves your business needs.

b) FUDBusters: Microsoft Positions Word 2003 as an XML Platform
By Bradley F. Shimmin
With all editions of Office 2003, you'll be able to throw around
WordML forms from day one. But do you really want a word processor to
act as a data input interface?

8) Full Nelson: Legacy Connectivity
------------------------------------------------------------
By Fritz Nelson
I had forgotten about Legato. Now, with EMC's consumption of it,
Legato--one of the few early backup vendors (excuse me: providers of
"solutions that keep critical business information available") that
could deliver a scalable, multiplatform approach--is back.

9) NWC Weblogs
------------------------------------------------------------
a) Daily Blog: What Did You Do This Summer?
Each summer, our crack team of editors sojourns across the globe in
search of a faraway destination where they can put their collective
brain cells to the task of setting down our editorial calendar for the
following year. This time, our editors found their way north, to the
sunny town of Syracuse, New York. Here are a few photos cataloging
their efforts.

b) Daily Blog: You Mean People Buy This Stuff?!?
It's a sure-fire bet that everyone who gets annoying e-mail promptly
relegates it to their trash bin, right? Right? Wrong.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/ecMj0Be3GS0V40B5tY0A2

c) Daily Blog: Operation Homelink
Lori MacVittie brought to my attention recently a very worthwhile
charity, Operation Homelink. We usually don't mention items like this
on the blog, but I think this charity deserves some attention and,
hopefully, support from you, our kind readers. So allow me to beg your
patience and consideration for what follows.
