2) The Daily Blog
------------------------------------------------------------
a) Linux/Job Advancement on the Cheap
So you've always wanted to pencil in some Linux certification letters
behind your name. Well, the Linux Professional Institute (LPI) has got
a deal for you.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eekp0E43wY0qh0CJE60A7

b) Windows "is" Cheaper. No Really
Microsoft is pushing against Linux again with a new ad campaign
focusing
on "the facts" of Linux vs. Windows total cost of ownership. The
Microsoft microsite, which is the basis of the campaign, truly does a
fine job of rolling out "independent" analysis concerning a number of
spot issues like staffing and server performance. Still, where's the
beef?
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/eekp0E43wY0qh0CJE70A8

c) Command Line, Schmmand Line
Who says you have to know your grep from your awk to use Linux or *nix
for that matter? Robin 'Roblimo' Miller over at NewsForge has been
eschewing the command line since 2000. According to Robin, it's now
possible to run Linux without knowing any commands besides
point-and-click and cut-and-paste.

Editor's Hot White Paper Pick: Structured Records Management for
Business Applications
-------------------------------------------------------------

means
by which a business can begin to demonstrate its recordkeeping
accountability to shareholders, customers and regulators. Learn how
e-Records software can bring formal, structured recordkeeping practices
to the electronic information produced or managed by business software.

b) Top 11: Bad Torvalds, Bad
First up for 2004, we're looking for the Top 11 "Last" things you want
to hear Linus Torvalds say. Make us spit milk out of our noses, and
we'll publish your submissions in print and online. Here are some ideas
to get you started.
--I'm going to be in Australia (and on airplanes) for the week, but
we're all in the capable hands of Andrew, so why worry? The fact that
I'm fleeing the country should in no way be construed as anything
sinister at all, no siree. Nope. I'm innocent, and nobody saw me do it.
(OK, Linus actually said this.)
--Remember how I said SCO was evil and just plain wrong?

5) Current Forum Threads: Ask The Experts
------------------------------------------------------------
XP Pro on Proliant 1600
I'd like to install Windows XP Pro on my Proliant 1600, but so far I
haven't had any luck. The system has two RAID5 disks with the
SmartArray. I keep getting this message, "CPQARRAY.Sys is corrupt.
Press
any key to continue." I downloaded and installed a service pack from
Compaq that was supposed to take care of the problem, but it turns out
it was for Windows 2000. I would like to use XP Pro and save a few
dollars by not having to purchase Windows 2000.

    Auspicious 2004
------------------------------------------------------------
By Scott Campbell
New regulations and ILM (information lifecycle management) will be a
bigger boon to storage and IT than Y2K was four years ago.

If you're going to mobilize applications, you can't live without
middleware. But picking the right middleware product is a dicey
proposition.

9) Security Threat Watch: Vulnerability in Recent Linux Kernel
    Branches
-------------------------------------------------------------
A vulnerability in nearly all recent Linux kernel branches (2.2, 2.4
and
2.6) was last week's big news. The vulnerability allows a local
attacker
to manipulate kernel memory and thereby potentially execute arbitrary
code with root/kernel privileges. Many Linux vendors scrambled to get a
patch out the door.
