1) The State of Wireless Networking
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
By Dave Molta
Wireless is both compelling and inevitable. We will have pervasive
high-speed wireless data services -- it's just a question of how and
when. And though debates continue about which wireless technology is
best able to deliver these services, there's little question that Wi-Fi
will be a key element of the global broadband wireless fabric. Wi-Fi
won't be the only technology, but like dial-up modems and Ethernet, it
has achieved a level of acceptance that virtually ensures its long-term
viability.
While Wi-Fi may be the new frontier, the trick is to know when the time
is right to boldly cross over to adoption. We examine the status of
wireless LAN standards, vendors and security.

Plus, be sure to tune in to hear Dave's commentary on the present and
future of Wi-Fi.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/ehNn0GO4rP0G4g0CYwF0AQ
And then get his inside take on advanced wireless networking and how
companies are deploying these techniques.

a) Wireless Networking Adoption Stories
By Dave Molta
In this special report we focused less on the underlying technology and
more on the implementation of wireless and the benefits realized by
early adopters. For organizations that are just testing the waters --
and that's most of you -- there are plenty of lessons to be learned.

b) Vontu Protect Monitors Data Departures
By Lori MacVittie
Sending confidential data to machines outside the corporate network may
violate local or federal policies. Vontu Protect 3 software detects
when
sensitive data leaves the corporate network and alerts administrators.

c) Quick Takes: Wireless Access Points
By NWC Editors
In this edition we look at Gateway's 7000 Series Wireless Access
Points,
SoftMaker Software's PlanMaker 2004, AutoProf's Policy Maker
Professional and Sarvega's Business Integration Module.

a) Your Favorite 404 Errors
We're looking for your help in creating a new 404 error page for
Network
Computing. Sure, we could just write something like "we're sorry, but
we
couldn't find your file." But that is so unimaginative. Send us your
suggestions for a more interesting 404 headline, and we'll use it for
our 404 page -- at least until someone tells us we have to take it
down.

b) Special TechQuiz: Web Site Management
Don't miss your last chance to take Phase Three of our quiz
triumvirate.
This final test is on Web site management. If you think you know how to
run a Web site, be sure to test your mettle. If you get all the answers
right, your name will go into the running for a free copy of
MarketingSherpa's "Buyer's Guide to Web Analytics" (a $200 value). Good
luck!

c) TechQuiz: Wi-Fi Networking
There's still time to test your knowledge of the 802.11 standard with
our latest quiz. If you can outsmart our editors and get all the
answers
right, we'll throw your name into the hat for a free NWC mug and/or
subscription to NewsGator's Online Services.

d) Top 11 List
This week, we're looking for the "Top 11 things that SpongeBob
SquarePants can teach us about working in IT." Enlighten us in a very
underwater kind of way, and we'll publish your entry in print and
online. Here are some ideas to help you get started.
--Oxygen is optional.
--It could be worse, you could be tossing fries in an underwater greasy
spoon.
Thanks to NWC Reader Erik Dauplaise for submitting this idea.

Here are some of the must-read news stories we're following this week.
a) Who Wants to Bet Against Cisco?
Potential customers for Cisco's shiny new router rained a bit on the
company's recent marketing parade. But don't bet on this slowing down
Cisco in its pursuit of world domination.

b) Linux Database Market Growing
The overall market for relational databases was nearly flat last year,
but the Linux market posted huge gains.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/ehNn0GO4rP0G4g0CYwL0AW

It's large and expensive, and it doesn't produce much power. But it
could mark the beginning of a new wave in power technology.

in North America?

c) Developing Trends: The Drag on Web Services
By Don MacVittie
Vendors claim that 200 to 300 transactions per second is very
acceptable
for Web services. How can we convince them that poor performance is
unacceptable?
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/ehNn0GO4rP0G4g0CYwQ0Ab
d) Industry Insights: The Trusted Computing Dilemma
By Mike Lee
Trusted computing won't succeed unless it benefits end users. If it
also
happens to help vendors, that's OK.

e) Letters: Trustbusting
NWC Reader Donald R. Register II asks, "Why make a big deal about Media
