5) The Daily Blog
~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-~-
a) I Was Wrong
OK, so they got me. Only a couple of days ago I called up Airespace and
then wrote here that any merger was a way off. Little did I know that
the "way" was about 48 hours.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/elcY0GPvuP0G4g0C8Fo0E2

b) Active Defense
A couple of days ago, I attended one day of the Department of Defense
Cyber Crime Conference 2005. I was only there one day because that was
the only day they had sessions that weren't classified. That I was
there
at all, though, was a novelty, since this was the first time (in the
four years of the conference) that they've invited anyone from the
press.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/elcY0GPvuP0G4g0C8Fp0E3

c) Cisco, Smart on Dumb Airespace?
The big news today is Cisco's bid to buy Airespace for $450 million.
Most of the pundits are on track with their remarks, but Frank
Dzubeck's
comments in the Wall Street Journal about Cisco not having a "dumb
strategy" are absolutely hilarious. It is not so much because they are
a
clever play on words, but more because it indicates how dumb the
industry's perception can be.

strategies and techniques to repel attacks. Here are the books to keep
close by.

Thursday, January 20, 2005
11:00 AM PST / 1:00 PM CST / 2:00 PM EST
Whether your company sees IT as a strategic weapon or simply as a
"business enabler" or cost center, the outsourcing model has tremendous
appeal. Yet along with the benefits of outsourcing come added
complexity
and risk. The cost savings achieved from outsourcing can be more than
offset by the business cost of frustrated customers and end users as a
result of poor-quality applications. Register and receive guidance on
how to establish "strategic sourcing" relationships that deliver
maximum
business value.

Managing critical Web applications can seem like an unpredictable
series

and better utilization of your IT teams. In this TechWebCast, learn why
today's Web applications make the application crisis inevitable, the
key
to faster problem resolution, why you cannot solve the problems alone
and how to engage the right resources to isolate and solve the problem.

d) VoIP: Implementation Strategies for the Corporate Enterprise
Thursday, January 27, 2005
9:00 AM PST / 11:00 AM CST / 12:00 Noon EST
VoIP has long been on the list as a potential corporate cost-cutting
tool for technology executives. But the potential for VoIP goes well
beyond its ability to deliver savings on long distance charges. Many
companies are recognizing VoIP as a viable business proposition, with
significant cost reduction, improved productivity, increased innovation
and 24/7 access to corporate information as the most likely long-range
benefits. Still, despite these upsides, the quality of service, uptime
and potential security risks make IT managers apprehensive of
implementing enterprisewide VoIP. In this TechWebCast, editors from
InformationWeek, Network Computing and Network Magazine will discuss
the
business drivers and network architectural requirements for
implementing
corporate-wide VoIP.
