1) Quick Review: Novell Linux Desktop 9
By Michael J. DeMaria
The product's tight ties to Novell network services such as ZENworks
and
iFolder make it a viable candidate for the desktop in most
Novell-centric shops. Just don't expect it to go beyond the traditional
SUSE distribution.

2) NWC Channels
a) Business Applications Channel: Adobe's New Toys
Adobe announced version 7.0 of its Acrobat family of products, which
includes Acrobat 7.0 Standard, Acrobat 7.0 Professional and the free
Adobe Reader 7.0. As Adobe continues to beef up and expand its
enterprise offerings, the ability of users to interact with those
systems via the free Adobe Reader continues to grow as well.

b) Security Channel: CSI Show BlogReport
Like any self-respecting New Yorker, I'm still recovering from the
Massacre of November 2. My Manhattan neighbors chose regime change
nearly 9 to 1, so at least I've had plenty of shoulders to cry on--that
is, until my employer sent me to the epicenter of presidential
politics,
Washington, D.C., for the Computer Security Institute conference this
week. Ah, well. I'll have to distract myself with discussions of
vulnerability assessment, policy management, configuration management,
anomaly detection and, perhaps most important, regulatory compliance.

c) Storage Channel: What's New at SNW
Well, the major events of SNW are over for this year, and there's a lot
new out there yet again. Highlights from the show include iSCSI getting
upscale with more robust, higher priced products hitting the market.

3) YackITyYack
a) Best Blog Awards Winner
The final votes are in. We're pleased to announce our grand prizewinner
(selected from the 10 finalists) of the Best Independent Tech Blog
Readers' Choice Awards. Stop by and see the best of the best.
http://update.networkcomputing.com/cgi-bin4/DM/y/ekg40GPvuP0G6u0CxOv0Az
b) IT Codename Generator
You've heard all those great military codenames for various missions,
names like Enduring Freedom, Operation Desert Storm and Golden
Pheasant.
Well, now you can use our interactive Codename Generator for your own
IT
operations. Don't settle for boring names like "Verity Upgrade." Try
"Infinite Justice" on for size and impress your coworkers with a name
more fitting to your project.

c) IT Exam: VoIP ROI
Test the state of your convergence readiness with our self-scoring IT
Exam. We'll take you through the five key questions that will allow you
to determine if VoIP is right for your organization now or in the
future.

d) Last Mile: Steve Ballmer--The Music Man
By Bradley F. Shimmin and Tim Wilson
This Edition: Top 11 pirated songs found on Steve Ballmer's secret
iPod;
the IT codename generator; and Pez memory sticks.

e) The Daily Blog: IT Consulting for Free
Okay, a slightly misleading title to the blog. What I meant to convey
was, do you think IT departments are properly consulted on system
purchases? The IT shop is the place to go for assistance when looking
into new systems. We offer free advice, so we don't get left holding
the
bag later. Do you often feel left out of decisions made by other
departments?

f) Ask the Experts: Winrunner 7.0 Problem
I'm unable to synchronize my tests in Winrunner 7.0. The set_window and
Web sync functions are not waiting long enough, even with a 100-second
delay. obj_wait_info doesn't wait long enough. The time out given is
the
max (i.e., 32767 coz, beyond that the Winrunner is not recognizing). I
can either wait or make the delay between the execution of two
statements 250-plus milliseconds. Can anyone suggest a better solution?
Thanks!

d) E-Poll: Enterprise-class Authentication Systems
For our February 3, 2005, issue, Network Computing will take a look at
enterprise-class authentication systems--servers and client-side
technologies and tokens to replace or supplement standard user
name/password authentication--all with a view to eventual single sign
on. We'll focus on management via global directory services. Tell us

7) Eye on Security
a) Alertcon: Cisco Security Agent (CSA)/Buffer Overflow Attacks
Cisco Security Agent (CSA) provides server and desktop security for
Microsoft Windows and Solaris platforms. CSA versions prior to
4.0.3.728
could allow a remote attacker to bypass the buffer overflow protection
functionality. If the victim is logged in, a remote attacker could
perform two buffer overflow attacks within a specific period of time,
which would allow the second buffer overflow attack to bypass the CSA
protection. This could allow an attacker to gain unauthorized access to
the system with elevated privileges.
