Forward to a friend!
UDC Goes to Toon Town
HP's Utility Data Center, or UDC, as it is more affectionately known,
is a high-end set of products and services for enterprises that need
hardcore data center flexibility. A "minimum implementation" of UDC costs
at least a million dollars. The UDC is a serious offering for serious
companies.
HP announced today that it is demonstrating the power of UDC by making
cartoons? The four-minute film, "The Painter," was created by an
award-winning company called 422 based in Bristol, England, using the UDC
installation at HP's Bristol Labs and with help from HP lab staff.
HP has for the past couple of years provided networked PDAs at the
Sundance Film Festival. This is the first year they'll actually enter a
film.
HP says that the animation project "demonstrates how computing
resources can be assembled, organized and managed virtually using the
flexibility of the UDC, a key component of the HP Adaptive Enterprise
architecture. It also illustrates the value of utility computing, in which an
end-user taps into a large pool of virtual resources, but pays only for
what is used."
The film was rendered using a prototype utility rendering service
developed by HP. 422 rendered the high-quality film in about 17 days
"instead of the nine months it would have taken without the use of the UDC,"
according to a company press release. - Mike Elgan

Inside HP This Week
Building Brand: When you hear Hewlett-Packard, what do you think?
In a concerted effort, HP will be spending at least half its
advertising budget to create a cohesive, branded image that holds across all
regions and product lines. "One Voice" is a project designed to unify the
look of HP products, consolidate suppliers and agencies and renegotiate
prices to create consistency. "One Voice is also aimed at HP employees
themselves, who are increasingly asked to look outside their individual
divisions, and work to sell the company as a whole, looking for added
revenue, and building new products, like expensive printing systems tied
to HP data centers, that cross traditional lines of business," Forbes
magazine said. Allison Johnson, senior vice-president for global brand
and communications at HP, told the magazine that in 2002, less than 10
percent of HP's advertising budget was focused on brand advertising.
This year she said she expects the company to spend about half its budget
on branding, although HP will not say how big that budget is other than
less than 5 percent of total revenue. About $400 million of that budget
will go to push its image with consumers in a campaign called "you and
HP," scheduled to begin appearing in the fall.

Why Alpha's Omega Makes Sense
Then Compaq CEO Michael Capellas decided in March 2001 to abdicate
Alpha and adopt Itanium. A variety of factors went into the decision. With
OpenVMS now being ported to the Itanium architecture, and not the Alpha
platform, all of this bodes well for HP and its hundreds of thousands
of loyal OpenVMS customers.
