Forward to a friend!
Et Tu, Europe?
I have good news and bad news and more good news about how HP servers
are doing in Europe.
First, the good news. HP EMEA server shipments are up more than 20
percent in Q2 compared with the previous year, according to a new report
from Gartner Dataquest. HP dominates the overall server market there with
40 percent.
The bad news is that IBM shipments grew over 40 percent during the same
period, and Dell's grew by almost 30 percent. And although server
shipments from all companies are up 21 percent, fueled by discounting and a
weak dollar, overall server revenues for all companies grew just 5
percent. HP is losing money overall on servers there, as they are here,
which tempers any glee they may feel in Palo Alto over dominant market
share.
The other good news is that HP's relatively poor European showing was
caused at least in part by temporary phenomena, including layoffs,
distraction by and investment in the massive Integrity line and the ongoing
"transitions" to Itanium. HP views all these things as onetime bitter
pills that fuel sustainable long-term growth.
Let's hope that's true, and that HP can get back on track winning
market share from competitors in Europe, and turn to profits in Q4 as
they're expecting. -- Mike Elgan

Inside HP This Week
Real Deal on Real Estate: HP's consolidation in the Sacramento, Calif.,
area may create a bargain for some other company. HP is moving its
Roseville, Calif., server and storage hardware assembly operation to
Houston (where it's NOT a dry heat) so the complex it will vacate in October
is up for lease. Some lucky leasers could get a big discount on the
space since HP had to pony up some cash to get out of the lease. The
complex's owners, Amir Development of Beverly Hills, may use that cash to
offset lower rents it may charge to attract new tenants in an area with
almost 12 percent vacancy rates for industrial space, MSNBC reported.
